Students identify potential WIL options related to their professional and academic aspirations and consider how to prepare for the WIL placement. Service learning and volunteer opportunities beyond formal WIL are identified and discussed for students seeking impacts in the community.

This course will help Justice Studies students to communicate better within the justice system and beyond. Students will find the skills they develop in this course to be useful in many other relevant Justice Studies courses that require various aptitudes in conducting research, essay writing and/or making presentations. The first half of the course introduces students to different registers of writing, along with a solid foundation in grammar. The second half focuses on discipline specific competencies, including writing legal briefs, writing academic research policy following proper APA usage; as well as being able to write factual, concise and accurate reports, and to effectively communicate publicly and in legal proceedings.

Students examine the role of community policing acting in equal partnership with the diverse groups in contemporary society to identify and implement effective solutions for community problems. The course begins with an analysis of traditional policing and moves on to a discussion of community policing as the future of policing. Emphasis is placed on learning the skills - self-direction, tolerance, problem solving, critical thinking, conflict management, and mediation - needed for practicing effective community policing.

Students examine the role of forensic science in criminal investigations. Emphasis is placed on using evidence such as fingerprints, hair, fibres, bullets and blood patterns to identify and link a suspect to a crime. Also, the identification, collection, packaging and protection of forensic evidence from a crime and presentation of evidence in court are studied.

Students will learn how mental health and addictions can present in individuals and the ways in which practitioners in justice services areas can collaboratively respond with trauma informed intervention to crisis situations with competence, empathy, and compassion. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate interprofessionally to enhance critical and systems thinking. The course also prepares students for the impact that responding to calls of crisis, trauma, and distress can have on the first responder through learning about emotional well-being and building a personal self-care plan.

Students explore the operational, legal, and investigative uses of Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) to support community safety and law enforcement operations in Canada. Emphasis is placed on the regulatory requirements and standards for the safe and ethical use of RPAS technologies, while respecting privacy and confidentiality considerations. The course examines relevant platforms, key components and technologies, flight operations, government requirements, and the use of photography and real-time imagery from RPAS platforms to support crime prevention, search and rescue, and traffic investigations, as well as in emerging areas such as emergency management and disaster relief.
