Project Management
The Master of Project Management and Graduate Diploma in Project Management provide enriching, professionally relevant, and flexible academic experiences in Project Management. The programs prepare graduates to function effectively in diverse industry careers that utilize project work (e.g., information technology, engineering, life sciences, health care, arts, media, transportation, and supply chains). Coursework combines academic rigour of evidence-based management with real world applications to provide specialized project management training that supports project related managerial decision making.

Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission, applicants must be:
- Qualified graduates of a four-year honour’s undergraduate degree or equivalent from a recognized university (minimum B- average).
- With 2-3 years of relevant work experience. Relevant work experience is determined by the admissions committee and might include project-related work in the public, private or not-for-profit sector, particularly that which involves leadership roles. Applicants should clearly demonstrate the relevance of their work experience in the statement of intent and resume submitted with their application. Work experience is reviewed through the applicant’s statement of interest, submitted resume, and referee assessments.
Additionally, all applicants must meet the University of Guelph’s English Language Proficiency requirements for admission. If an applicant’s first language is not English, or their undergraduate degree was not taught at an English-language institution, an English Language Proficiency test will be required.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Master of Project Management program, graduates will have the capacity to:
- Summarize the typical PM processes that are considered essential to any project and identify appropriate PM practices for various organizational cultures.
- Identify key linkages between organizational and project‐level issues, including decision making, motivation, and project roles; integrate diverse perspectives in order to select and execute effective strategies; and generate decision making processes that maximize efficiency (i.e., time to decision and resources applied) and necessary stakeholder adherence to decision outcomes.
- Apply basic PM tools and techniques such as communications, risk analysis, cost estimation and budgeting, and quality control in an organizational context.
- Apply ethical standards to make decisions and take appropriate action in a project management context; and demonstrate how a project can be executed according to the standards of the organization hosting the project.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal leadership and communication skills in a team setting; demonstrate an ability to evaluate, assess, and improve group and individual comprehension of complex issues; and demonstrate an ability to evaluate, assess, and improve group and individual comprehension of complex issues.

Courses
This course provides a conceptual overview of the leadership competencies that lead to leadership performance. Students will explore and learn a method for assessing their own leadership competencies. They will learn a process for developing themselves, the knowledge and skills relevant for effective leadership. Topics include managerial competencies models, assessment models, learning styles, intentional change process, and personal development plan. This course emphasizes those techniques most frequently used in personal development and coaching individuals and teams.
This course provides students with an understanding of the concepts, principles, and practices for management consulting. Students will be exposed to the various components of the consulting process, consulting approaches and styles, client- consultant relationships, issue and problem diagnosis, reporting of results, and professional codes of conduct and ethics. The emphasis is on techniques most frequently used in the context of both internal and external organizational roles and as a career choice.
This course provides students with an understanding of the concepts, principles, and practices for project management. It introduces an understanding and appreciation of the importance of managing projects, project teams, the project management systems and tools, the various components of the project management process, and professional codes of conduct and ethics. The emphasis is on the techniques most frequently used in the context of, both internal and external organizational roles of a project manager.
In this course, students learn advanced project management techniques, including estimation, scheduling, costing, scope management, quality management and project closure.
In this course, students will learn how to work with suppliers and contractors in an organization's supply chain to procure the materials and services required to complete a project. Students will learn core principles of the procurement process as well as planning, scheduling, contracting, and managing influence within the supply chain.
In this course, students develop the strategic competencies needed in the practice of project management, including aligning projects with organizational strategy, selecting projects, obtaining funding, managing costs and finances, managing portfolios, structuring projects, and structuring organizational roles for effective project oversight.
In this course, students learn how to analyze and visualize statistical data to make evidence-based business decisions. Students will work with data using established statistical techniques to generate findings and interpret and communicate those findings to make practical managerial decisions.
In this course, students will gain an understanding of various aspects of current topics relevant to the practice of project management. Sample topics include agile approaches to project management, managing virtual teams, environmental sustainability in project management and cross-cultural project management.
Students work on a capstone case study and submit a report that integrates learning from prior courses. Course draws from the entire set of knowledge (KMs) from the project management curricula. Students present their work to a panel of business executives, professional project managers, and faculty.
