This course introduces students to graduate studies in Criminal Justice and Public Policy; to the disciplines of sociology, political science, and criminology; and to professional life in occupations related to criminal justice and public policy. Students acquire practical professional skills necessary to succeed in their graduate student career and successfully compete for professional positions in the criminal justice field. Topics may include assistantship responsibilities, applying for scholarships and further graduate study, presentation skills, career search strategies, resume development, and networking opportunities with industry professionals.

This seminar course surveys classical theoretical perspectives and more recent theoretical developments in the sociology of crime. It examines the assumptions and logical structure of each perspective and justifications of particular criminal justice/public policy responses. The course also critically assesses recent empirical research relevant to each perspective. This course is offered in conjunction with SOC*6350. This capstone course is designed for students enrolled in the course-based option of the MA in Criminal Justice and Public Policy. It provides students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge, skills and attributes gained throughout the CJPP program and engage collaboratively with others to consider, and work on, contemporary criminal justice and public policy issues, debates, and solutions. This may include engaging with relevant affected parties and/or mobilizing outcomes to diverse audiences in multiple ways.
