Sociology (SOC)
Department of Sociology and Anthropology, College of Social and Applied Human Sciences
Students in sociology study the organization of society, from the personal to global level, analyzing social structures, patterns, and experiences. Students understand the impact of social structures and social inequalities on communities, groups, families and individuals, and examine practices that improve collective life. In the required courses, students learn about the applications and real-world impacts of sociological research and receive training in qualitative and quantitative social research methods and theory development. The program electives allow students to explore different sub-areas in sociology as well as interdisciplinary sociology-anthropology courses. Course offerings fall under four general areas: social inequality and social justice; crime and policing; place, environment and sustainability; everyday life and social institutions.
Students can take both Sociology (SOC) and Sociology and Anthropology (SOAN) courses for their Sociology specializations. Please consult courses listed under each area during course selection. Courses will normally be offered in the semester designated.
